This DVD is an evidence-based bone health exercise program researched, designed and presented by physiotherapist Michelle Kenway B.App.Sc (Phty). P Grad Cert exercise for women (hons). Dip.Ed, Member APA.

It is designed specifically to improve the bone health (and muscle strength) of the hips, spine and wrists.

The DVD consists of modified low impact exercises designed specifically to improve muscle strength, spinal posture, balance, muscle and joint flexibility and functional ability. It involves physiotherapist demonstration and description of all exercises, emphasising safety, gentle progression and correct exercise technique.

Bone-Fit for Beginners is suitable for individuals with normal BMD (T score above -1 SD), individuals with a moderate fracture risk (T score below 1 SD and about -2.5 SD and individuals with increased risk of osteoporosis, particularly menopausal women.

Individuals with a high fracture risk (BMD below 2.5) with or without traumatic fracture(s) are advised to seek their doctor's approval before commencing this program initially at the beginners level only. Individuals may require initial physiotherapist/exercise professional supervision depending up on the individual's functional status, DXA scan, age and existence of co morbid conditions.

Muscle groups addressed in this program are those related to the most 'at risk' areas of fracture:
Core spinal stabilizers
Scapula stabilizers
Hip extensors
Back extensors
Major hip, knee, spine, and forearm muscle groups

Beginner level strength exercises in this program are
Sit to stand (using a chair)
Wall ¼ to ½ squats
Chair supported ¼ to ½ lunges
Lying hip abduction adduction
Lying hip extension
Prone lying back extension
Prone lying scapular retraction and depression
Seated bicep curls (with forearm pronation and supination)
Seated triceps extension
Seated upright row

Beginners are advised to undertake at least two weeks of twice weekly familiarisation with the exercises before progressing to light hand weights when they feel comfortable and competent,

The intermediate and more advances progressions in this program incorporate exercise ball and hand weights for the same exercises listed above.

Exercises NOT included in this program and TO AVOID in individuals with osteoporosis include

Dynamic abdominals (sit ups)
Twisting/spinal rotation
Trunk flexion
Explosive loading
High impact loading
